Gadget Lab Show: MacBook Pro With Retina Display, Super Soakers, WWDC Highlights

This week on the Gadget Lab Show, we go hands-on with the MacBook Pro with Retina Display, splash around with some Super Soakers, and take a look at the latest updates surrounding iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion.

First up, reviews editor Michael Calore and staff writer Christina Bonnington check out the MacBook Pro with Retina Display, the latest addition to the MacBook lineup. It sports a gorgeous 2880×1800 resolution Retina display and a slimmed-down 0.71-inch thick form factor. We like the keyboard and trackpad, as well as the port arrangement on the sides of the device. Unfortunately, the device’s ultra compact, carefully designed interior doesn’t lend itself to DIY repairs or upgrades. Expect a full review on Wired Reviews soon!

Next, Christina heads to the beach to try out some Father’s Day gifts the whole family can enjoy: a pair of Nerf Super Soakers. The Lightning Storm Water Blaster costs $25 and holds 32 ounces of water. It also has a detachable blast shield for trying to stay dry. The Electrostorm Water Blaster is smaller, holds 2.6 ounces of water, and will run you around $10.

To close this week’s show, Mike and Christina talk about the latest updates to Apple’s software lineup. iOS 6 was announced at WWDC on Monday. It included a number of notable upgrades including a new Maps app, Passbook for collecting tickets and barcode passes in one place, and a Do Not Disturb mode to escape all those pesky calls and texts. OS X Mountain Lion was also detailed. It’s been available as a developer preview since February, but Apple showed off new updates to Safari, greater iCloud integration into the OS, and a Power Nap feature that keeps your system up-to-date even while you sleep.
